The Moore Family of Murderkill Hundred, Kent County, Delaware

The Moore Family of Murderkill Hundred, Kent County, Delaware

There are several families with the Moore surname in Kent County, Delaware in the mid-1700s – 1800s. There is a similarity of first names among these families: Thomas, Isaac, Samuel, John being the most prevalent. This sketch highlights the Moore family from Murderkill Hundred in Kent County, which is a different Moore family, which was from Duck Creek & Little Creek Hundred, living at the same time and having similar first names.

The first Moore in Murderkill that can be positively identified as distinct from the Duck Creek & Little Creek Hundred Moore family is Isaac Moore. Several genealogies, notably Colonial Families of Delaware [REF 1]  and White and Coles (2003) [REF 2] both claim that Isaac Moore of Murderkill Hundred was a son of Thomas and Sarah Moore. While true that Thomas and Sarah had sons Isaac, Samuel and John, [REF 3] they are from Duck Creek and Little Creek Hundred in Kent County and are therefore not the same Moore family as the one from Murderkill Hundred.

Isaac Moore of Murderkill Hundred did have brothers: Samuel, John, and William, Jr. Thomas Moore of Duck Creek and Little Creek does not mention having a son William. In 1803, Isaac Moore is named as the sole executor of the estate of his brother, William Moore, Jr., and guardian of his children. [REF 4] Also in 1803, he was granted Letters of Administration in the estate of his brother, John Moore. [REF 5] In 1804, Isaac Moore was the surety in the bond posted by Susannah Chipman Libby Moore to administer the estate of Samuel Moore, also a brother of Isaac. [Ref 6]

1          _______ Moore and _______  ________ likely lived in Murderkill Hundred, Kent County, Delaware. They had at least the following:

         i. 2  Isaac1 Moore, b. say 1756; married by 1 March 1775 Agnes ____ Chipman, widow of Stephen Chipman.

ii. Samuel Moore, b. say 1759, d. about 12 June 1804 (probate); [REF 7 m. by 1799, Susannah Chipman. [REF 8] Susannah Chipman was a daughter of Benjamin Chipman, brother of Stephen

Chipman, whose widow, Agnes,  married Isaac Moore. As with his brother, Isaac, this Samuel Moore is not the same as the Samuel Moore, son of Thomas and Sarah. Both men lived in different Hundreds of Kent County.

iii  John Moore, b. say 1763, d. about 4 May 1803. [REF 9 Likely brother of Isaac Moore as Letters of Administration were granted to him, 4 May 1803. Probably the same John Moore on the Kent Co., Murderkill Hundred Tax Lists for 1783, 1789-1790, 1793-1795, 1800-1802. [REF 10]

iv. William Moore, Jr., b. say 1767, d. between 27 April 1803 (will) and 4 May 1803 (probate); m. by November 1789 Rebecca Broadway, widow of Ambrose Broadway. [REF 11 William Moore, Jr. names his brother Isaac Moore as his Executor and guardian of his children. [REF 12] William Moore, Jr., appears on the 1787 Tax List for Murderkill Hundred with William Moore, Sr. (possible father of Isaac, Samuel, John, William, Jr.?) [REF 13] Both also appear on the 1790 Reconstructed census for Murderkill Hundred. [REF 14]

2          Isaac1 Moore, was born say 1756. He married between 23 June 1772 and 1 March 1775, Agnes ____ Chipman, widow of Stephen Chipman. [REF 15] Agnes ____ Chipman was appointed administratrix of the estate of Stephen Chipman on 23 June 1772. [REF 16] On March 1, 1775, Isaac Moore, now husband of Agnes Chipman, was appointed guardian of Stephen Chipman’s minor sons, Thomas and James. [REF 17] Thomas Chipman, the son of Stephen Chipman names Isaac Moore as his “father-in-law” in his will of 28 July 1789 and furthermore names his “brothers,” [i.e. step-brothers] Vincent, Isaac, and Andrew. [REF 18]

Isaac Moore first appears on the Tax List of Murderkill Hundred, Kent Co., Del. in 1776 (assessed £8). He subsequently appears on the 1777-1780, 1782-1783, 1786-1789, 1790, 1793-1795, 1800-1805, 1809, and 1812. By 1812, he is assessed $884 for over 150 acres of land. By 1813, he is no longer on the tax roll, but his son Isaac Moore, Jr. appears to have inherited the 150+ acres of land and is assessed $1460. [REF 19] Isaac Moore died about 19 May 1812 in Murderkill Hundred, Kent County, when Letters of Administration were granted to his son, Andrew Moore and wife, Anner Moore. [REF 20] Isaac and Agnes had at least three children, as named in the will of Thomas Chipman. There may have been others.

i.           3 Vincent2 Moore, b. 1 March 1775; m. Sarah Wyatt.

ii.        Andrew, b. say 1777, d. about 1 Nov 1826; [REF 21 m. 21 September 1813, Anner ___ Edwards, widow of Andrew Edwards. [REF 22]

iii.        Isaac, Jr., b. say 1779, d. after 1817. [REF 23 He apparently inherited lands of his father.

iv           John [?], b. say 1780, d. about 12 August 1812. Possibly a son of Isaac and Agnes as Isaac Moore [perhaps Jr.?] administers his estate with his brother [or son?], Vincent Moore as attorney and bondsman. [REF 24 He was not named as receiving a legacy from Thomas Chipman, but is likely a son of Isaac or a close relative.

3          Vincent2 Moore (Isaac1) was born on 1 March 1775. [REF 25] He married Sarah Wyatt, [REF 26] daughter of Noah Wyatt and Scinty Minner, on 12 Dec 1806. [REF 27] Vincent Moore owned several parcels of land in and near Frederica, Kent Co., at various times. Scharf [REF 28] mentions that Vincent Moore owned about 546 acres of land, called “Andrew’s Venture” in Murderkill Hundred in 1815 and in 1810 owned part of a parcel of land called “Bear’s Garden.” In 1815, Vincent Moore owned a general store in Sandtown and in Berrytown near Frederica. Vincent Moore was involved in a number of land transactions from 1803-1828. In 1817, he purchased two tracts of land from his father, Isaac Moore in Murderkill Hundred; one for 75 acres and one for 100 acres at $1,000[REF 29]

Birth of Vincent and Sarah Moore recorded in Family Record – Births, 1775-1886, held by Gene R. Major

In 1819, Vincent Moore and his wife Sally (Sarah) sold land to Risdon Plummer & Miriam, his wife, which was on the main road from Greensborough (Maryland) to Camden (Delaware) for $800 consisting of 16 acres, 83 perches. [REF 30] On 16 March 1826, Vincent Moore of Kent Co., Delaware bought two tracks of land in Caroline County, Maryland called Deer Pond and Orrel’s Chance from the Sheriff of Caroline Co., being the highest bidder. He sold these two tracks of land on 2 March 1827 to James Carter of Caroline County, Maryland. [REF 31]

Vincent Moore died about 2 June 1828 and both Vincent and Sarah Moore are buried in Barratt’s Chapel Cemetery in Frederica, Delaware. [REF 32] The will of Vincent Moore, dated 3 June 1825,  names the following children: [REF 33]

          i.  Thomas3 Jefferson Moore, b. say 1802, d. 5 November 1859; [REF 34 m. about 1820 Catherine Johnson. [REF 35] Thomas J. Moore may have been born out of wedlock about 1802/1803. According to the Kent County, Delaware Bastardy Bonds, on 28 Nov 1803, Vincent Moore names Sally Wyatt as the mother of a male child (unnamed). [REF 36]

ii. 4 James C. Moore, b. 21 Oct 1805; m. Sally Ann Wyatt of Caroline County, Maryland.

            iii.  Agnes B. Moore, b. say 1807; m. 27 November 1824, Thomas B. Harrington. [REF 37]

vi. Mary S. Moore, b. 2 Mar 1816, d. 14 Aug 1882; [REF 41 m. 16 June 1834, Peter Lowbar Harrington. [REF 42] Mary Moore Harrington (age 33) is living with her brother, Vincent E. Moore in the 1850 Census for Murderkill Hundred along with her two children, Agnes (age 15) and Sarah E. Harrington (age 12) [REF 43] In the 1860 Census for Murderkill Hundred Mary S. Harrington is living with the John H. Carrow family and wife Agnes Carrow. [REF 44] Presumably this is her daughter, Agnes Moore Carrow. Her real estate is valued at $800. In 1870 Census for Murderkill Hundred, Mary S. Harrington and her brother Vincent E. Moore are living with the John H. Carrow family and wife Agnes Carrow. [REF 45] She has a personal estate valued at $400 and real estate valued at $1200.  This family is living near the Thomas T. Lacey family (wife Clarissa A. Moore, daughter of James C. Moore, uncle of Mary S. Moore).

vii. Vincent E. Moore, b. 28 Aug 1818, d. 21 Nov 1897. [REF 46] He appears to have been unmarried. His sister, Mary Moore Harrington is living with him in 1850 and 1870.
