Zadock B.⁵  (Hezekiah⁴ Robert³ Robert² John¹) Lacey

 

Zadock B.⁵ Lacey was born 25 September 1790 as recorded in the Rogers, Moore, Wyatt, Ford, Lacey Family Bible Record, 1775-1887. [1]  Zadock Lacey married (1) Mary HOPKINS 5 December 1812. [2]  Mary Hopkins, died 5 December 1852 [3]  On 27 Sept. 1853, Zadock Lacey married (2) Mary R. Warrick [4]

Mary Hopkins (b. 6 December 1792, d. 5 December 1852) was the daughter of Josiah HOPKINS (son of John and Elizabeth Hopkins) and Elon (or Elen) COULTER (daughter of Robert and Naomi Coulter. [5]

Zadock B. Lacey witnessed the will of Isabel Clark Harris of Indian River Hundred, Sussex County on 3 April 1839. [6]  She leaves land in Columbus, Ohio to her daughter and she may be related to the family of Benton Harris who married Leah Lacey, daughter of Robert Lacey and Sukey Stephenson. [7] Isabel Clark Harris married William J. Harris, son of Zachariah Harris [8] Note that Benton Harris was also the brother of Betty Harris, who married William Baggs Lacey, son of Robert Lacey and Bridget [Ayliff].

 Zadock B. Lacey first appears on the 1820 Federal census for Indian River Hundred, Sussex County. He is listed with 1 M 26-45, 2 F <10 and 1 F 16-26. He is living next to his father-in-law, Josiah Hopkins and also near Spencer⁴ Lacey. [9]

He next appears in the 1830 Federal census for Broad Creek Hundred, Sussex County with 2 M < 10, 1 M 30-39, 1 F 15-19, and 1 F 30-39. If these are his children, evidently one of the females under 10 has left the household (or passed away), leaving one female who is now 15-19. This female is likely his daughter, Catherine. Additionally, two males were born after the 1820 census and are now under 10 years of age. These two are probably John C. Lacey and Thomas T. Lacey. [10]

Zadock next appears on the 1840 Federal census for Lewes and Rehoboth Hundred, Sussex County with 2 M < 10-14, 1 M 40-49, 1 F 5-9 and 1 F 40-49. Evidently the two males under 5 in 1830 are the two males 10-14 in 1840 (John C and Thomas T. Lacey). A new female appears and was born before 1840. [11 This person is likely the youngest daughter, Miranda Lacey. By this time Catharine Lacey had married Thomas Lynch.

In the 1850 Federal census, Zadock is enumerated in Broadkill Hundred, Sussex County. His age is given as 59 and is employed as a Miller. He is listed with his wife Mary (age 57) and two of his children (John C. Lacey, age 23, employed as a Tailor; and Miranda E. Lacey at age 16). [12]

The last Federal census that Zadock Lacey appears is the 1860 census of Broadkill Hundred, Sussex County. His age is given as 69 and is living in Milton with his second wife, Mary. [13]

Zadock B. Lacey appears on several tax assessments for Sussex County:

• 1813 Tax List for Lewes and Rehoboth Hundred. [14]
• 1816 Tax List for Lewes and Rehoboth Hundred. His estate is valued at $150, consisting of 2 yearlings, 1 sow and 6 pigs, and 1 sheep. [15]
• 1824 Tax List for Broadkill Hundred. His poll tax is $134. [16]
• 1840 Tax List for Lewes and Rehoboth Hundred. His estate is values at $162, consisting of a cow and heifer, a sow and pig, and 5 sheep. [17]
• 1844 Tax List for Lewes and Rehoboth Hundred. His estate is valued at $130 including 1 cow. [18]
•  1852 Tax List for Broadkill Hundred. His estate is valued at $161, consisting of 2 cows, 1 sow and pig. An entry “Moved to Cedar Creek” was made, but crossed out.[19]
• 1856 Tax List for Broadkill Hundred. His estate is valued at $150. An entry says “From C. Creek Hd." [20]
• 1860 Tax List for Broadkill Hundred. His estate is valued at $150. [21]

Zadock Lacey does not appear to be involved in any land transactions in Sussex County, Delaware. No deeds have been located where he is a grantor/grantee, but clearly had property, which was valued in several tax assessments.

Zadock Lacey died 28 March 1867. [22] Zadock Lacey’s estate was settled on 8 April 1867. Benjamin King and Cornelius White were administrators of his estate, as appointed by the widow Mary R. Lacey. His estate was valued at $153.86 based on the inventory. [23] No mention was made of any lands or legacies to his children.

 

  Children of Zadock and Mary (Hopkins) are:

  i. Catharine.⁶ Was born after 1812, although her gravestone says 10 Dec 1811, a year before Zadock and Mary Hopkins were married. She died 22 Jul 1886. [24] Catharine married Thomas LYNCH 28 Nov 1832.[25]

They had the following children:

                        3. James T. (b. abt 1837)

                        4. Eliza Jane (b. abt 1839)

                        5. Mary E. (b. abt 1842)

                        6. John Wesley (b. abt 1844)

                        7. Zadok P. (b. abt 1848)

                        8. Margaret S. (b. abt 1850)

                        9. William Alfred (b. abt 1852)

                        10. Anna (b. abt 1854) 

                        11. Henry Hopkins (b. abt 1859, d. 1944

 

ii. Eleanor (Ellen).⁶ She was born abt 1816. [26] She married David R. Wolfe on or about 18 December 1834. [27] She is likely the female under 10 that appears in the 1820 Federal census in the household of Zadock Lacey. [28] In the 1860 Federal census for Little Creek Hundred, her younger sister, Miranda Lacey is living with Eleanor’s family. [29]  She died 5 May 1874 in Laurel, Sussex County. [30]  Eleanor and David Wolfe had the following known children: [31]

1.     George W. (b. about 1836)

2.     Edward L. (b. about 1841)

3.     Erasman W. (b. about 1845)

4.     Mary E. (b. about 1850)

iii. Robert⁶ (b. after 1812 and possibly died about 1818).[32]  No further record. 

iv. John Cornelius⁶  (Captain) He was born 29 Oct 1826 and died 28 Sep 1914. [33] The ashes of his remains were sent to Delaware for burial. [34] He married Priscilla Cooper about 1853. [35] He moved to California sometime between the 1880 census (enumerated in Broadkill Hundred, Sussex County, Delaware) [36] and the 1900 census (enumerated in San Francisco County, California), [37] and likely after the death of his wife in 1892. John C. and Priscilla had the following children, all born in Sussex County:

1. John W. born about 1850, died 27 April 1852 [38]

2.  Charles Chevins.  born 10 Nov 1853, died 3 February 1932 in Seattle, Washington. [39] He married Emmilia Metlar in Washington 21 Mar 1910. [40]

3. James B. born 15 Feb 1857, died 15 May 1858. [41]

4. Mary S. (born 6 Oct 1860, died 1 May 1879. [42]

5. Sallie D. (born about 1865), [43] died 29 June 1905 in Camden, New Jersey). [44] She married Samuel D. Potter in Camden, New Jersey on 14 June 1891. [45]

6. Ella W. (born 7 December 1869, died 13 September 1961 in Alameda, California.[46] She married George Lack in California about 1894.

 

John C. Lacey  registered for the Civil War draft on 20 July 1863 from Milton, Broadkill Hundred, Sussex County as a sailor. No records have been uncovered as to whether he actually served. [47]

 

v. Thomas T.⁶  Was born 16 Jan. 1829 in Sussex County, Delaware. [48] He died 31 Oct 1902 in Frederica, Kent County, Delaware and is buried in Barratt’s Chapel Cemetery. [49] He married Clarissa Ann MOORE on 24 December 1850 in Kent County, Del. [50] Clarissa Ann Moore was born 14 Sep 1827 and died 16 Jan 1877. [51] She was the daughter of James C. MOORE and Sally Ann WYATT.

 

vi. Maranda E. She was born about 1834. [52] n 1860 she appears in the household of her sister’s Ellen (Eleanor) Wolfe family. [53] She may be the same Maranda Lacey that married Isaac Watson on 2 Nov 1862. [54] No other records appear after this date.

[32] The information about Robert Lacey as a son of Zadock Lacey comes from researcher William E. Lynch (descendant of Catharine Lacey & Thomas Lynch. Zadock was married in 1812 and daughter Catharine was born about 1812/13 and daughter Eleanor was born 1816. The next child is John C. Lacey born in 1826. There is enough of a gap for another child to have been born and possibly died prior to the 1820 census.
